Wedding Planning – Part 2 – The Dress

15 Jan

Evening everyone

I am taking the opportunity of it being reasonably quiet on the cake production front to get on with the wedding planning and (rather obviously) I have started to seek ‘the dress’ already.

Now those who know me know this is bound to be a painful experience as:-

1. I am totally indecisive about pretty much everything in my personal life (I figure its because I make so many decisions in my work life I am decided out on a personal level – well that’s my excuse anyway)

2. I have no idea what suits me. Seriously, not a clue. Hence my love of all things grey and black and a reason why I am never allowed shopping on my own, and finally

3. I have (sensitive people skip this one) really rather large breasts which tend to dominate my body-shape whatever weight the rest of my body decides it is going to be at any point. I.e. they dont shrink however much weight I lose, which makes shopping for anything (let alone THE DRESS) frustrating and at times totally hilarious.

So the hunt has begun and I have had a mixture of experiences in the various shops I have been to. I won’t name the ones that I personally didnt find helpful but I would like to commend a few on the service I received.  The Ivory Secret in Crediton and Truly Delightful in Totnes were patient and flexible whilst I tried on all types of dress and still didnt know what I wanted and Se Marier in Exeter slotted me in on Saturday to try some dresses without an appointment so I must thank all of them for making me feel special and like a proper bride.

I have tried on so many dresses and there are some truly beautiful options out there. There were some styles that I liked but I still dont feel I have found ‘the one’. I am torn between a fun, flirty number or a sophisticated, elegant number. And I like the idea of lace but I am not sure I am vintage enough to carry it off or that it will fit in with our day. (Good example of my indecisiveness in action!). One thing I do know though – I am no Pippa. The lumps and bumps that were on show in the ‘Pippa dress’ in one shop were enough to make the Peak district look flat – so that one is a definite no-no!!

Does anyone else feel like this? Or am I the only crazy bride-to-be out there???

I sign off a confused little bunny and hope that those of you embarking on the search are having more luck than me!!!

Wedding Fayres

11 Oct

Hi my lovelies

So now we are at the end of wedding season it is that time of year that see us busy with all the Autumn wedding fayres.

So far the Eat Sleep Cake express has booked themselves in to five wedding fayres where we had / will have our scrummy fairtrade, organic and locally produced cakes to sample. And we have on show some of the new techniques and design ideas that have been buzzing round in our heads for months.

The first show we did was at the Thistle Hotel (the old Rougemont) in Exeter on 4th September. We did our first wedding fayre there last year and had a blast, and now we are their preferred cake supplier as well. It’s a great central venue with plush furnishings and the added bonus of being right opposite Central station (easy to make that get away for your honeymoon with no driving!) and opposite Northernhay Gardens, which can provide a great back-drop for photographs.

Next we did the Debenhams two-day wedding event on 17th & 18th September at Debenhams in Exeter city centre. Luckily I remembered to leave my purse at home for that one or I think I would have spent far too much money – me and Designers at Debenhams cooped up together for two days is never going to end well!

Then we had the big one – the South West Brides wedding fayre at Westpoint Arena on 7th & 8th October. We had a larger stand than last year and really set it up with lots of delicious details as well as our show cakes, cupcakes, cookies and other delicious delights. We saw so many lovely brides and now it is a case of working my way through all the enquiries so don’t worry I will get to you soon if you havent heard from me already!

Sarah Lauren Photography  took a photo of the Eat Sleep Cake crew on our stand on Sunday so when I manage to get hold of it I will get it posted up.

The last two fayres we are doing are both the weekend of 12th / 13th November. The first one is a two-day fayre out at Killerton, the National Trust property nr. Exeter, and the other is on Sunday 13th November at the lovely Buckland-Tout-Saints hotel down near Kinsgbridge.

I hope to see some people there. I am going to finish this now before it takes me another month to finish (started this post on August 19th!!!)

Take care

Flower Power

13 Mar

Happy Sunday Everyone!

Thought I would do something slightly different today and showcase some gorgeous flower arrangements instead.

Flowers are so important at a wedding and I quite often end up drawing influence for the cake from whatever flowers my bride’s are going to be using. I love flowers but I will admit my arrangements are more ‘throw it in a vase and hope for the best’ rather than having any rhyme or reason to them.

So enjoy the floral spectacular and have a relaxing Sunday.

I will be spending today baking Taster cakes ready for the Wedding Fayre at Victory Hall, Broadclyst on Friday ( and Holne Park, Ashburton ( on Sunday, as well as finally starting to tackle the garden!!

Post more soon
